Met grote droefenis breng ik het nieuws van het overlijden van onze geliefde collega en oprichter van de Master Scientific Illustration Hans Rensema, op 27 september jongstleden.
Hij is 71 jaar geworden.
Hans Rensema was vanaf januari 1980 tot 2013 als anatomisch tekenaar en grafisch vormgever verbonden aan de vakgroep Anatomie en Embryologie van de Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences van de Universiteit Maastricht.
Hans was als initiatiefnemer zeer nauw betrokken bij de oprichting van de ‘Postgraduate Course in Scientific Illustration’ (sinds 2008: ‘Master of Scientific Illustration’, MSI) van de Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht i.s.m. de Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences van de Universiteit Maastricht.
Tussen 1990 en 1996 ontwikkelde en schreef hij het curriculum van deze 2-jarige Master (MSI).
De opleiding ging in 1996 van start met de eerste vijf studenten.
Van 1996 tot 2006 was hij als coördinator en docent verbonden aan deze opleiding.
Hij gaf onderwijs in de vakken anatomische illustratie (mens en dier), de illustratie van chirurgische ingrepen bij zowel mens als dier, medische beeldvormende technieken, grafische technieken en de ethiek m.b.t. het gebruik van proefdieren.
Daarnaast gaf hij colleges over de geschiedenis van de anatomische (wetenschappelijke) illustratie aan de masterstudenten van de MSI-Maastricht. Dit laatste is hij blijven doen tot hij ziek werd in 2019. Hij zou de lessen binnenkort weer oppakken, maar zover mocht het helaas niet komen.
Over de opleiding zei hij: “Dit is de opleiding die ik zelf altijd heb willen doen, maar die er gewoon domweg niet was.”
Vele studenten van over de hele wereld hebben inmiddels zijn unieke opleiding gevolgd en zijn in zijn voetsporen getreden.
Met de nuchtere kijk van een geboren en getogen Groninger doceerde hij het vak van wetenschappelijk verhalenverteller. Recht voor z’n raap en kritisch, vanuit een diepe passie voor wetenschap, lithografie, kunst en illustratie. Hij sprak met bewondering over historische en huidige vakgenoten. Altijd met een kritische houding uit liefde voor het vak. Visualisaties moeten accuraat zijn, wetenschappelijk verantwoord en technisch onberispelijk uitgevoerd. Elke lijn moet kloppen; een illustratie mag niet voor meerderlei uitleg vatbaar zijn.
Zelf blonk hij uit in pen- en inkttechnieken, grafiet en lithografie. Een vakman pur sang!
Volgens hem waren de beschikbare druk- en illustratietechnieken bepalend voor de verschillende illustratievormen in de tijd. Het uitbreidende scala aan technische mogelijkheden zag hij daarom nooit als een bedreiging, maar als een verrijking voor het vak, zolang de kwaliteit gewaarborgd bleef. Digitale computertechnieken omarmde hij dus als vanzelfsprekend.
Ook na 25 jaar is het curriculum dat hij schreef actueel.
Zijn visie en passie zijn nog steeds sterk vertegenwoordigd in de opleiding. “Geen schooltje spelen, maar het vak doceren!” Met kwaliteit en liefde voor kunst en wetenschap hoog in het vaandel.
“Kwaliteit komt altijd boven drijven.”
Tegen studenten die zich zorgen maakten over de toekomst als freelancer zei hij altijd: “Als je goed werk maakt, hoef je je geen zorgen te maken. Kwaliteit betaalt zich altijd uit.”
‘Darwin’ noemde hij dat.
Hans was eerlijk, geïnteresseerd, streng, zacht, perfectionistisch, idealistisch, ogenschijnlijk nors en vooral aardig. Hij trad niet graag op de voorgrond en had een bescheiden inborst.
Naast een gepassioneerd anatomisch tekenaar was Hans echtgenoot, trotse vader en opa. Van al het bovengenoemde vond hij dat het belangrijkste en daar genoot hij enorm van.
Wij hebben veel van je geleerd, Hans. Dank je wel.
Zijn droge humor, kennis, kritische blik en warme persoonlijkheid zullen gemist worden.
Onze gedachten zijn bij zijn familie en vrienden.

It is with great sadness that I bring the news of the death of our beloved colleague and founder of the Master Scientific Illustration Hans Rensema on 27 September last. He turned 71 years old.
Hans Rensema, worked from January 1980 to 2013 as an anatomical illustrator and graphic designer at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University.
As initiator, Hans was very closely involved in the establishment of the "Postgraduate Course in Scientific Illustration" (since 2008: ‘Master of Scientific Illustration, MSI) of the Academy of Visual Arts Maastricht in collaboration with the Maastricht Academy of Visual Arts. the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University.
Between 1990 and 1996 he developed and wrote the curriculum of this 2-year Master's (MSI).
The program started in 1996 with five students.
From 1996 to 2006 he was coordinator and teacher of this program.
He taught the subjects anatomical illustration (human and animal), the illustration of surgical procedures in both humans and animals, medical imaging techniques, graphic techniques and the ethics of the use of laboratory animals.
In addition, he gave lectures on the history of anatomical (scientific) illustration to the MSI-Maastricht master students. He continued to do the latter until he became ill in 2019. He was due to resume lessons shortly, but it should not come to that.
He said about the program: "This is the study that I have always wanted to do, but it simply wasn't there."
Many students from all over the world have now followed his unique education and have followed in his footsteps.
With the down-to-earth view of a born and raised Groninger, he taught the profession of scientific storytelling. Straightforward and critical, from a deep passion for science, lithography, art and illustration. He spoke with admiration about historical and current colleagues. Always with a critical attitude out of love for the profession. The visualizations had to be accurate, scientifically sound and technically flawlessly executed. Every line must be right; an illustration may not be open to multiple interpretations.
He himself excelled in pen and ink techniques, graphite and lithography. A true professional!
According to him, the available printing and illustration techniques were decisive for the changing illustration forms over time. He never saw the expanding range of technical possibilities as a threat, but as an enrichment for the profession, as long as the quality was guaranteed. So naturally he embraced digital computer techniques.
After 25 years, the curriculum he wrote is still up to date.
His vision and passion are still strongly represented in the program. “Not playing school, but teaching the profession!” With quality and love for art and science of paramount importance.
“Quality always comes to the fore.”
To students, concerned about the future as a freelancer, he used to say, “If you do a good job, you don't have to worry. Quality always pays off.”
He called it "Darwin".
Hans was honest, interested, strict, gentle, perfectionist, idealistic, apparently gruff and above all friendly. He did not like to come to the fore and was modest in nature.
Besides being a passionate anatomical drawer, Hans was a husband, proud father and grandfather. Of all the above, he thought that was the most important and he enjoyed it immensely.
We have learned a lot from you, Hans. Thank you.
His dry humor, knowledge, critical eye and warm personality will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
