Hoogleraar TU/e Harm Dorren (EE) plotseling overleden

Vroeg in de ochtend van maandag 30 maart is op 49-jarige leeftijd geheel onverwacht prof. dr. Harm Dorren overleden. Hij was actief in de groep Electro-Optical Communications Systems(ECO) bij de faculteit Electrical Engineering. Na terugkeer in Amsterdam van een zakenreis naar Los Angeles werd hij vanwege een ernstige infectie met spoed geopereerd. Desondanks is hij kort daarna overleden.

Harm Dorren studeerde in 1991 af aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht in de Theoretische Natuurkunde. Daar promoveerde hij in 1995 in de Geofysica. In 1996 trad hij in dienst van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. In de periode 1996-1999 was hij tevens deeltijd-onderzoeker bij KPN Research. In 2007 werd hij benoemd tot voltijds hoogleraar bij de faculteit Electrical Engineering met als leerstoel Optical Signal Processing. Ook was hij vanaf maart 2007 wetenschappelijk directeur van onderzoeksschool COBRA. – de Inter-University Research School on Communication Technologies Basic Research and Applications. COBRA is een topinstituut op het gebied van optische communicatie. In 2002 was hij gastonderzoeker aan het National Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba in Japan en in 2013 en 2014 aan het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA.

In 2002 won hij een NWO VIDI Award, in 2006 gevolgd door een NWO VICI Award. Zijn onderzoeksexpertise ligt in het veld van optical (packet) switching, optical signal processing, ultrafast photonics en optical interconnects. Daarnaast toonde hij zijn ondernemerschap door een start-up bedrijf te creëren op het gebied van data centre technologieën. Professor Dorren heeft als (co-)auteur talloze wetenschappelijke tijdschriftpublicaties en conferentiebijdragen op zijn naam. Daarnaast was hij van 2005 tot 2009 associate editor bij het IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics. Als wetenschappelijk directeur van COBRA speelde hij een sleutelrol in het fotonica-onderzoek. Harm Dorren was een vooraanstaand wetenschapper.

Bij de faculteit Electrical Engineering is met ongeloof en verslagenheid gereageerd op het overlijden van Harm Dorren. Binnen de faculteit en zijn onderzoeksgroep komt zijn overlijden hard aan. "Harm Dorren was een graag geziene collega. Naast zijn gezin was zijn werk een belangrijk deel van zijn leven. Wij zullen hem enorm missen."

We wensen zijn echtgenote, kinderen en familie veel sterkte bij het verwerken van dit grote verlies.

TU/e professor Harm Dorren (EE) suddenly deceased

In the early morning of Monday the 30th of March, prof.dr. Harm Dorren of the group Electro-Optical Communication Systems (ECO) of the department of Electrical Engineering and scientific director of COBRA, has suddenly passed away at the age of 49 years. He just returned from a business trip to Los Angeles. On his return in Amsterdam, because of a serious infection, he underwent surgery urgently. Nevertheless he passed away shortly after.

Harm Dorren received his MSc degree in Theoretical Physics in 1991 and the PhD degree in Geophysics in 1995, both from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He joined Eindhoven University of Technology in 1996 where he most recently served as a full professor and as the scientific director of COBRA – the Inter-University Research School on Communication Technologies Basic Research and Applications. COBRA is one of the world's top institutes in the field of optical communications. Between 1996 and 1999, he also was a part-time researcher in KPN-Research in the Netherlands. In 2002 he was a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba in Japan. In 2013 and 2014 he was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, USA.

In 2002 he won an NWO VIDI award, and in 2006 an NWO VICI award. His research interests include optical (packet) switching, optical signal processing, ultrafast photonics and optical interconnects in data centres. With his entrepreneurial spirit, he also started a company on data centre technologies. Harm Dorren (co-)authored numerous journal papers and conference proceedings and served as an associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics between 2005 and 2009. As the scientific director of COBRA he was one of the key players in the photonics research. He was recognized a leading scientist.

The Department of Electrical Engineering reacts with disbelief and is deeply struck by the death of Harm Dorren. "Next to his family, his work was an important part of his life. Harm Dorren was a much liked colleague. We will miss him dearly."

We wish his wife, children and family a lot of strength to cope with this great loss.
