Joanna Aldred

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our cherished colleague, Joanna Aldred. Joanna was an incredible lady whose kindness, willingness to help others, and unwavering support left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was not just a colleague but a beloved friend who dedicated over 34 years to Elsevier in academic publishing.
Joanna’s journey began in the Earth Sciences department as a Desk Editor during a time when our industry was on the brink of transformation. As the digital revolution unfolded, she embraced change and grew into the role of Journal Manager, always eager to learn and adapt. Her career took a significant turn in 2006 with a six-month secondment in Publishing, and from that moment on, she became an integral part of STMJ team.
For many years, Joanna was a driving force behind the Current Opinion journals in Green and Sustainable Chemistry. Her extensive knowledge, dedication, and collaborative spirit made her a cornerstone of our team.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joanna was also deeply involved in the RELX SDG Resource Centre and served as a compassionate listener for Mindlife. Her gentle demeanor, customer-centric approach, and exceptional problem-solving skills have left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with. We will profoundly miss her wisdom, warmth, and the generosity she brought into our lives.
Joanna was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Our hearts go out to her sons, Alexander and Eduard, her daughter-in-law, Demi, her grandson Evan, and her wider family. We also extend our condolences to her Current Opinion colleagues, her Journal Development and Editor Engagement Center of Expertise colleagues, and the Flex team, all of whom have lost a long-standing and valued member of their teams. Joanna was always willing to share her vast knowledge and expertise, and her absence will be felt deeply.

        Warm summer sun,
        Shine kindly here,
        Warm southern wind,
        Blow softly here.
        Green sod above,
        Lie light, lie light.
        Good night, dear heart,
        Good night, good night.

I have worked with Joanna since she joined Elsevier albeit not always directly. My heartfelt condolences. <br /> Ursula

I had only just written to Joanna about how often I refer to her secondment as Associate Publisher with the Social Sciences team as a brilliant example of being open and curious to try something new at any stage of your career - for me, and I know many others, truly inspiring. Joanna leaves a special legacy among her publishing colleagues and I am so very sorry that she didn't have the chance to enjoy the wonderful retirement plans she had shared. My sincere condolences to all of Joanna's friends and family, especially Alexander, Eduard, Demi and Evan,

Joanna was my mentor and close colleague when I joined the Current Opinion team, and I consider myself very lucky to have shared those moments with her. Joanna was patient and kind in her support as I settled into my new position taking over her journal Current Opinion in Plant Biology, big shoes to fill! ...So much knowledge to share. And as a friend so kind and always willing to listen. She was so happy to become a proud Granny to Evan, we would share stories and photos. It's so sad to loose Joanna at a time when we were about to celebrate her time at Elsevier and send her on her way to enjoy her hard earned retirement. My heart goes out to Joanna's family. May the memories help to bring light during these difficult days.

Joanna, I feel very fortunate to have worked with you so closely on the microbiology portfolio, meeting you every week (usually more than once ). You always cheered me up and had something to say about everything and that brightened my day at times. Thank you for all that you taught me and your patience. May you rest in peace. My thoughts and condolences to your loved ones whom you spoke of so often. Mark x
