Joanna Aldred

21-05-195822-01-2025
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our cherished colleague, Joanna Aldred. Joanna was an incredible lady whose kindness, willingness to help others, and unwavering support left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was not just a colleague but a beloved friend who dedicated over 34 years to Elsevier in academic publishing.
Joanna’s journey began in the Earth Sciences department as a Desk Editor during a time when our industry was on the brink of transformation. As the digital revolution unfolded, she embraced change and grew into the role of Journal Manager, always eager to learn and adapt. Her career took a significant turn in 2006 with a six-month secondment in Publishing, and from that moment on, she became an integral part of STMJ team.
For many years, Joanna was a driving force behind the Current Opinion journals in Green and Sustainable Chemistry. Her extensive knowledge, dedication, and collaborative spirit made her a cornerstone of our team.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joanna was also deeply involved in the RELX SDG Resource Centre and served as a compassionate listener for Mindlife. Her gentle demeanor, customer-centric approach, and exceptional problem-solving skills have left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with. We will profoundly miss her wisdom, warmth, and the generosity she brought into our lives.
Joanna was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Our hearts go out to her sons, Alexander and Eduard, her daughter-in-law, Demi, her grandson Evan, and her wider family. We also extend our condolences to her Current Opinion colleagues, her Journal Development and Editor Engagement Center of Expertise colleagues, and the Flex team, all of whom have lost a long-standing and valued member of their teams. Joanna was always willing to share her vast knowledge and expertise, and her absence will be felt deeply.

I will remember Joanna as a very kind woman who was respected at Elsevier and could be relied on to give great advice and guidance to her colleagues. I remember fondly her charity knitting events and the support she gave to the other charitable events hosted at work. My sincere condolences to her family and friends and this very difficult time. May she rest in peace.

Dear Joanna’s Family, and Boys and Grandson,

I have known Joanna for around 40 years, ever since we rolled up in Leiden from the UK as graduates to start new jobs there. I soon came to know her as one of the most reliable and kind-hearted people I will ever meet. And she had a knack for picking anything new in no time, which was to be found in her interests in all sorts of different things, from geology (she had a very good degree), through archaeology (with published articles), through old books, to knitting. And I do still remember her knitting socks in preparation for her first son’s arrival. She was very proud of her two sons, and new grandson. The boys had a great mother and grandmother. I shall miss her.
With all best wishes, Tim Horscroft

My deepest sympathies for the loss of Joanna. When I first started at the company, I had the privilege of sharing an office with her, and I will always remember her kindness, intelligence, and the warmth with which she spoke about her family. And every since, it was always a pleasure to have those chance encounters by the coffee machine. Joanna will be dearly missed, and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
