Joanna Aldred

21-05-195822-01-2025
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of our cherished colleague, Joanna Aldred. Joanna was an incredible lady whose kindness, willingness to help others, and unwavering support left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was not just a colleague but a beloved friend who dedicated over 34 years to Elsevier in academic publishing.
Joanna’s journey began in the Earth Sciences department as a Desk Editor during a time when our industry was on the brink of transformation. As the digital revolution unfolded, she embraced change and grew into the role of Journal Manager, always eager to learn and adapt. Her career took a significant turn in 2006 with a six-month secondment in Publishing, and from that moment on, she became an integral part of STMJ team.
For many years, Joanna was a driving force behind the Current Opinion journals in Green and Sustainable Chemistry. Her extensive knowledge, dedication, and collaborative spirit made her a cornerstone of our team.
Beyond her professional achievements, Joanna was also deeply involved in the RELX SDG Resource Centre and served as a compassionate listener for Mindlife. Her gentle demeanor, customer-centric approach, and exceptional problem-solving skills have left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with. We will profoundly miss her wisdom, warmth, and the generosity she brought into our lives.
Joanna was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Our hearts go out to her sons, Alexander and Eduard, her daughter-in-law, Demi, her grandson Evan, and her wider family. We also extend our condolences to her Current Opinion colleagues, her Journal Development and Editor Engagement Center of Expertise colleagues, and the Flex team, all of whom have lost a long-standing and valued member of their teams. Joanna was always willing to share her vast knowledge and expertise, and her absence will be felt deeply.

Dear family and friends of Joanna,

On behalf of our entire team at Elsevier, please accept our condolences and our deepest sympathies. We are wishing you and all your family peace and courage during this difficult time.

For many years, Joanna was a driving force behind the Current Opinion journals in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, where she established new processes and fostered a vibrant community of editors, editorial boards, and authors. Her contributions extended to the now-retired Special Issue Database (SID), and she took on a year-long secondment as Associate Publisher in the Social Sciences group, where she enhanced relationships with affiliated societies and shaped strategies for our journals.

Most recently, Joanna stepped into the role of Associate Publisher in the Flex team on February 1, 2023. She often reminded us that “you are never too old to try something new,” and her invaluable contributions helped maintain and develop journal portfolios, especially during transitions. Her extensive knowledge, dedication, and collaborative spirit made her a cornerstone of our team.

Joanna and I came from different streams within the company many years ago. We came together working on a group of Current Opinion journals, originally from the London office. During that time we regularly lunched together not only "talking shop", but discussing all sorts of things. Joanna was bright, kind and extremely open to sharing her knowledge. She was also somewhat reserved, which gave us both a good laugh at times because our approach to various situations could be so different, she from the UK and me from the USA. Joanna's passing is such a shock, I wish she could have enjoyed her well deserved retirement. She was proud of her sons and I offer both and Joanna's remaining family my condolences.

Dear Family and Friends of Joanna,
I first got to know Joanna when I became the Publishing Director for Chemistry in 2021. Joanna was a key member of our Chemistry team, and it quickly became evident that she was exceptionally skilled in her role. She understood our systems inside out, knew how to handle any situation, and had Editors and Authors completely at ease, demonstrating her genuine care for doing the right thing and ensuring that the journals she worked on were the very best they could be. Alongside her professional capabilities, Joanna was warm, kind, and always maintained a positive outlook. Everyone liked her.
I felt both sad and pleased when Joanna received the opportunity to become a Publisher. While I was saddened to see her leave our team, I was delighted that she was gaining a well-deserved chance to showcase her talents in a new role.
I was thrilled when Joanna returned to Chemistry as a Flex Publisher to manage a portfolio of journals. Her presence during these last few months was invaluable. Once again, she displayed her unwavering commitment and expertise, and it was a true joy to work alongside her again.
I was deeply saddened when I heard the news of her passing, as were all of us in the Chemistry journals team. When I shared the news with the Editors of the journals she was working on, the outpouring of sadness and heartfelt comments about Joanna truly reflected the respect and admiration everyone had for her.
Please know that Joanna was highly regarded here at Elsevier, and we are all profoundly saddened by her loss. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
        With deepest sympathy,

Dear family and friends of Joanna
We are so very sad at the loss of our dear colleague, Joanna.
She was a founding member of the MindLife Champions back in 2020 - wanting to help her colleagues with their wellbeing through the pandemic years and beyond. She conducted coffee chats and also produced a video on dealing with grief and bereavement as well as helping promote MindLife services and resources.
Joanna was always first to appear on our regular Champion catch up meetings, and was always offering ideas and willing to help with projects. She was so kind and gentle, and so lovely.
We will miss Joanna so much and our hearts and love go out to you all for what you are going through right now.
        With sad hearts
